S1E7: Why Men Don’t Like Counseling
Join me for the final episode of the season where I discuss why men do not like to focus on their mental health. Simply put, the stigma surrounding mental health suggests weakness and vulnerability for those who seek treatment. According to the National Library of Medicine, nearly 40% of men refuse to talk about their mental health, despite 35% of men who have indicated they believe they have had a diagnosable mental health issue at some point.
I have been searching for a cis, heterosexual male to be featured as a guest on this show since I began the rough draft phase, which was almost a year ago. Though there were a few who responded, none were willing to talk openly (even if their identity was hidden).
Instead of feeling discouraged (there is a time frame to stay within), my brilliant advisor said to me, “You know, you’ve been trying to find a guy to be on the show, and nobody has come forward, isn’t this directly highlighting the problem you are trying to talk about in the first place?”
As we round out this first season, I encourage any of my male listeners who have what it takes to step up to the plate and come on the show. It does not matter what your experience with mental health has been, I only want to focus on your perspective. I would love to open season two with your interview!
This episode also rounds out the season by asking other listeners who can relate to the show to share their experiences, and if you think you have a story or insight we can work with, I am all ears!
Thank you all for an incredible first season!
